How to fix Macbook Pro white startup screen?

I recently just opened my Macbook Pro from a while ago and when I boot it up it just doesn't work. It shows a white screen and after a while is shows a grey cross. I've tried everything but it just doesn't work. Is my laptop broken for good, or can it be fixed? I need help ASAP
