10.12.6 update hangs

Like many already, I want to report a hang of this update (stops at Apple logo - with indicator bar full).

I've tried waiting a long time. I tried (as a not very experienced user) doing the Cmd R - and reboot from a new download from the internet - same result. I finally tried Cmd R - and re-instal from my Time machine backup, that I took using an external disk before I tried to update. That took 4 hours, but it is all up now. This all has taken me most of one day.

I thank Apple for Time Machine, and the Apple Community, since I managed, with not much experience to follow the various bits of advice online. I thank my experience with Windows that has made me never take backing up for granted.

Now, however, I cannot even vaguely contemplate doing the smart things with Kext or whatever, and will have to wait until someone tells me it is safe to upgrade some time in the future.  Or go to Apple, which I have neither the time nor money to do (or maybe I have to?).

How and when will I know it is safe to update please? I don't do anything smart with my MBP.  Lots of technical photos and documents, that's all.  HP basic printer Laserjet Pro. The 1TB disk is 3/4 full but I have not had any performance issues to date.  I will have to upgrade my h/w soon I presume.

It's possible you have something installed that prevented the update from running correctly. If you feel adventurous you can try installing the combo update while in Safe Mode.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Thankyou Dialabrain,

I'd be very surprised if I have anything unusual (that I know about), installed. I have very standard s/w and nothing else. Since the last effort cost me a day, and if SafeMode doesn't work it might cost another day, I don't think I can do that right now. However, I did read up about Safemode, and I will try to educate myself more on the Combo update. I'm not in your world though! I will give it a try when the workload permits. Or, as so many people seem to be having difficulties, could I wait until Apple does something unilateral?

You're welcome. Not many people have a problem updating. There are millions of Macs, there are a small number of those that run into a problem. As I mentioned normally because of something they installed.

Please install and paste the results

Kind regards, Robyn

Robyn,

To be honest there is so much "junk" that has been installed that if it were my Mac I would do a clean install of Sierra and only restore the Data from the Time Machine backups. However it looks like the last Time Machine backups were in January and/or March of this year.

You can certainly wait to see if someone else will help you clean up your Mac a piece at a time. It's possible you could successfully install the 10.12.6 update while in Safe Mode but with everything that is installed I can't be sure.

Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.

Start by creating a more recent backup, then uninstall all the garbage preventing it from working properly:

  • "Bitdefender"
  • "McAfee"
  • "Trusteer"

Follow their respective uninstallation instructions, assuming you can find them, and that they are effective.

That might give your Mac a fighting chance to work the way it's supposed to work.

Run the report again and click [Clean up].

I would uninstall Bitdefender. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files.

I would uninstall MacAfee. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

Get rid of Trusteer. It doesn’t work well under Mac OS.
