Unable create volume

I have a Macbook Pro With 750GB HDD. In the process of cleaning up my Mac I had deleted the partition and the  diskutility shows only one partition with 749 GB as OS X Base system with format as Mac OS Extended. The add volume button is greyed out. There is a message displayed 'This volume can not be split because the resulting volumes would be too small.'. Can anyone help me to in creating a volume so that the os can be installed.
