Time machine question.

Hello guys! I have a question. I have an older Macbook Pro with Sierra installed and my recent back up on time machine is with Sierra OS. My question is, how can I roll back from Sierra to lets say Yosemite with a time machine back up from Sierra? I've done this before when Yosemite came out and I rolled it back to Mavericks from a time machine from Yosemite  and I was successful on doing so. I did this last night using Diskmaker X on a usb with Yosemite. Yosemite installed just fine but when I used time machine it put back Sierra. I'm not sure how I did it the first time but this time, it didn't let me roll back to older os version and keep my files with newer version time machine back up. I did try time machine from the installation screen (the one you get from rebooting the macbook and pressing option key and then in OS X Utilities Restore from Time Machine Backup) but it said the version of time machine was an newer version and can't be installed or something around those lines. Then I just clicked on Install new OS X and once that installed Yosemite, I did the restore from backup which installed Sierra back... Any suggestions? Thanks in advance guys!
