What can I do to connect my Vizio TV with my Ma...

I have a 2008 Vizio HDMI TV that I want to use as a duel monitor with my early 2015 Macbook Pro. I upgraded the TV in my room to a 2015 Samsung Smart TV a few months ago, so I no longer had any use for my little Vizio until my sister pointed out that I could use it as a monitor since she had the exact same tv which she now used as a duel monitor with her Toshiba laptop. I tried doing this with only an HDMI cord since my Macbook has an HDMI port. When I plugged them in together it seemed as though something was keeping them from being able to fully connect to each other. My Macbook screen would flash from a black screen back to its normal screen (whatever I had pulled up at the time) every few seconds. And the Vizio remained black (the TV was on). I had began to wonder if the Vizio had finally had enough and just died. But my boyfriend plugged his Toshiba laptop up to it using the same HDMI cord and it worked perfectly. I know my Macbook can connect to a TV with an HDMI cord because I do it all the time with my Samsung to watch movies through the laptop to the TV. So, what exactly does this mean? Is my Macbook too new and my Vizio too old to use together? Am I missing a step? Do I need a different or additional cord to connect between the two devices? What do I do? HELP! Any and all constructive feedback is much appreciated.
