How does Apple pencil work in mail.

HHow does Apple pencil work in mail. Can you write your message freehand. I don't see to be able to make it write. There is no squiggle mark on the keyboard like in notes.

It's pretty cool, actually. As far as I can tell, you can only use the Pencil in response to e-mails that have attachments. Find an e-mail where you have received a JPG or a PDF (or send one to yourself), and then while viewing the e-mail hold the pencil down on the attachment. The pop up window should come up that gives you all the regular options (like Message, Mail, Save Attachment, etc.) and one of the choices should be "Markup and Reply". Then the attachment opens in a markup window where you can draw all over it, add a signature, etc. with the pencil.

Right now finding all the features in apps that are unlocked with the pencil is kind of cool, although I do wish there were a comprehensive document from Apple somewhere about this that simply lists/explains them so that we can get the most out of our new pencils.

Many thanks for your reply. I am a little disappointed that the pencil won't work to send mail. Still maybe this will come later.

As a workaround, you could hand-write messages in the Notes app and then select Mail from the Share menu.

I am disappointed to read in this thread that, in fact, the pencil does not work natively in the Mail app as the description on Apple's product page for the Pencil clearly states.  This is blatent misrepresentation.

But I do take comfort that from my experience the pencil works really well which means that we want it work in more places.  Better that way round than thee pencil not really working but doesn't really work in lots of places ;-)  Hopefully over time the functionality will evolve out from where it is today.

My new apple pen in not writing in mail on my recently purchased ipad pro 9.5, well charged, paired but still no result.
