ipad beeps when plugged in to imac

Hey there - just got my new iMac and wanted to plug my 3rd gen ipad via its usb charger/link, and my ipad starts beeping on and off like its trying to charge/not/charge/not ... iTunes says "could not connect to this iPhone" even...

This happened with two different usb charger/links - both are USB 2 (the iMac is of course USB 3).

Anyway, my iPhone 5s works great with its own usb charger/link cable (the new smaller plug variety) and iTunes recognizes it.

Could this be a USB cable issue (2 vs. 3)? Is my iPad the problem?

Any help would be, Oh My God, gratefully appreciated!

Eric

iPad is not designed to charge via USB.  iPad is designed to charge via the supplied wall charger plugged into an electrical outlet.

When I plug the ipad in to my imac it beeps on/off/on/off - such that iTunes can't recognize it at all - I then get a cluster of "could not connect" messages ... so if I can't connect my ipad to my imac by usb ... how do I?

Oh, I thought you were trying to charge your iPad.  You could have a defective cable.  Try with another cable and see if the same problem exists.

I wish it was the cable...

So I made a Genius bar appointment - same problem happened there.  It took them 6 times, but eventually they were able to restore my ipad and it was able to be plugged in to a computer and be recognized, charge, etc...

And then I took it home, plugged it in to my imac and it happened again.  Ugh.  The Genius employee said it did not look like the connection/pins was an issue at all.

One thing I mentioned during the appointment that I have not mentioned here is that I used to plug my ipad in to a pc since I first got it.  They didn't seem to think that should matter...

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts rbrylawski !  Any more?

If the iPad operated normally at the Apple Store, then the issue may be with your computer at home?

I had the same problem. Plugged into a Macbook Pro and it beeps.

Resetting the iPad - No Change

Using a Different cable - No Change

Plug in an iPhone - No Problem

Taking the plugs in and out 20 times and blowing in the outlet - No Change

Swearing and some light abuse to the ipad - No Change

So I just did a sync/back up from iTunes, even though the beeping continued. After starting the backup the beeping stopped and has never come back.

And it just came back. Beeping continuously.

Hi Michael Bacon,

Have you got any solution for this issue?

I have face the same and its irritating.

Please guide if you can.

Hi,

I appear to have the same problem, flashing, beeping and saying cannot connect to this computer. Does anybody know if a 3rd party 30 pin cable as oppose to an official Apple cable might be the problem? I am thinking some form of reduced power capability in a cheap cable.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

I was having the same problem and used a differnt apple cord and it's OK now.  the cord that woked is about 1/2 the height of the cord that didn't work the IPad side.  Hope that helps.

I had the same issue with my iPad 2 in the last 2 days and switched an apple compatible cable (that syncs with my iphone 4 to my brand new macpro) to a frayed, split apple cable that I was about to toss and it worked great.

Wonder if there is something missing in the 'compatible' cables from the original.

cheers

ooops

I replied to a post without reading it completely. Sorry

You might have resolved this issue by this time. Incase if you still have the problem...

I had the same problem today with my iPad3 and iMac iTunes connection  with flashing, beeping and saying cannot connect to this computer. It's the cable issue, the default aging iPad charger cable works fine while charging the battery but doesn't work while connected to the iMac iTunes. I tried with all my iPhone cables and finally one in good condition worked...:)
