How do I disengage from iCloud without losing d...
I think I have made a huge mistake and I don't know how to correct it. I bought an 12" iPadPro with 512gb of space My desire was to have something to work with that is easier to travel with than my late 2011 Macbook Pro. I planned to put roughly 260 gb of my files and folders on it and I figured I would have space for years to come.
My first problem was that there isn't any way to connect the laptop to the iPad and transfer my files and folders. I was able to move a lot of non-work stuff like photos and music using iTunes and a cable but not my work data. For instance I might need to work on a website and I store all the text and photos in a folder, sub folders and files for that particular website. Those photos are segregated from the Photos app, they are specific to a particular website. Since there was no way to airdrop, drag and drop or use flash drives, I took the recommendation of Apple support articles and bought enough space on iCloud to upload my files and then download them to the iPad. This was the recommendation given to transfer files.
After going through the process of setting up the account, I uploaded the documents folder of my MacBook. The first thing that I noticed was that it disappeared from Finder on the MacBook. Then I went to the iPad and found out that there isn't anything like a documents folder on an iPad. I did more research and found out that you need a third party app to use files and folders on an iPad. I still can't figure out how to get my stuff off the cloud and onto the iPad except to download 10,000 files individually. Isn't there something like "Download Folder" available or do I need to download the contents of every folder and sub-folder one by one? When I read the Apple support articles, it said that I could transfer my documents using iCloud Drive. What I think I have done is empty my MacBook of its Documents and put them on the cloud. I wanted to send copies to the cloud, not my documents.
I did this all prior to a one month trip. When I was on a 12 hour flight there was nothing on the iPad to work with and when I finally got wifi, I had to wait for documents to download one by one before I could do anything and of course that ate up all the data allowance on my phone plan. I don't have reliable access to wifi all the time and in some countries, I don't want to connect and transfer data over wifi.
I'm pretty sure that iCloud and iCloud drive won't work for me, I'll never have time to find and download all those files to my iPad, I'll just use it as a toy for Facebook and iTunes. What I desperately need to know is how to restore my laptop to it's previous state. When I tried to disengage myself from iCloud drive, I got warnings that data was going to be deleted from my MacBook. What do they mean? Did I really remove all my documents from the Macbook? I don't see the documents in Finder. Are they going to be deleted if they do still exist on my MacBook? The folders and files that did get onto my iPad are going to disappear also? What a disaster. If they exist only on iCloud drive, is there a reliable way to get them all back?
I do have time machine backups from before this nightmare started. They are a month old now. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I'm gun shy about using any more of Apple's support articles because I guess they are over my head. I really thought iCloud Drive was something I could use like a drive. Put something on a drive with one machine and take it off with another. What I seem to get is two empty machines instead. It could be that the terminology and technology has passed me by and I'm misunderstanding everything so I'm asking for your help with some simple explanations and instructions.
Thanks in advance,
ES
