iTunes and app

I'd like to be able to stream music in my iCloud-synced Apple Music library to a machine I don't own and, therefore don't 100% trust. It seems like (a) iTunes and (b) an app-specific password are the solution to that problem. However, I haven't been able to get the authentication to happen.

Questions:

1) are app-specific passwords limited to third party apps? If so, can anyone see a rationale for that limitation?

2) is there a trick to this, or something I'm obviously doing wrong?

3) is there a better solution for what I'm trying to accomplish?
