I have two macs

I have two macs - I want separate desktops but if I add a file to one desktop it automatically appears on the other. how do I stop this but still maintain the iCloud capability?

Go to System Preferences/iCloud/iCloud Drive/Options and turn off Desktop and Documents syncing.
