How do I load just photos from a backup?

I backed up my phone before updating to iOS 11. Lucky I did, since I lost my photos soon after. That's fine, I can get them back, but there are other new things on my phone that I don't want to lose by restoring from a backup. Is there anything I can do to get my pictures back without losing everything after the backup?

Restoring a backup is all or nothing. Was the backup to iCloud or to a computer via iTunes? If it was to a computer via iTunes, there are 3rd party apps that can help. One example: Premium iPhone Backup Extractor - Windows or Mac | iBackup Extractor

You also may want to check whether you had iCloud Photo Library turned on. If you did, the photos wouldn't be included in an iCloud backup but can be accessed via www.icloud.com and also should sync back to your phone. See iCloud Photo Library - Apple Support
