the selected device has no output controls hdmi

I've used my macbook pro to display videos from a number of sources on my Sony Bravia TV since I purchased my computer years ago. Just yesterday certain sources will not play sound on the TV and this is displayed when the HDMI device is selected "the selected device has no output controls". Also it will not let me change the sound on my computer. I've plugged headphones in and out. For example iTunes and youtube will play sound on the TV but Adultswim plays to the computer speakers. If I watch adult swim and youtube at the same time, the youtube video's sound is through the tv while the adult swim's sound is through the computer speakers. Thanks in advanced.
