Copying Time Machine content to new drive

I would like to copy my current Time Machine backup content from my existing drive to a new, larger drive.  Is it possible to simply copy the content to a new HFS+ formatted drive via finder and then select the new drive in TM or are there other issues?

Thanks.

See this super-guide to TM.

Get an external drive with no data on it. Try booting into the Recovery Partition (command - R on a restart) and select the old drive in Disk Utility/Restore, then select your Internal Drive in Restore from. Select the new drive as the destination. This will likely reformat the external drive erasing all data.

You may have to Inherit the backup if Time Machine doesn't recognize the backup.

If things don't work, use this link to troubleshoot. A4 might be a good place to start.

Yes. Please read Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup drive to a new backup drive - Apple Support.

"Copying your backup data might take some time to complete, depending on the size of your backup."

That's an understatement. Instead, I recommend the following: Restore a disk - Apple Support. It's much faster, requires only three steps, and it works.

Thanks to all for the information.  This is just what I was looking for.  One way or the other I'll be able to get this done.
