not charging

I plugged my MacBook Air in to charge and the red charging light doesn't come on. It has done this intermittently before. Any ideas why this happens and how to avoid/rectify?

The first step is to try a different power adapter on your MBA and/or try your MBA's power adapter on a different one. If you can't do this, an Apple Store “genius” bar can usually help, and give you a free diagnosis if it's not just the power adapter: https://support.apple.com/contact
