How do you send a file through iMessages

On my mac I can drag a file over to imessages, I can even download it on another id on the mac. I have tried to send the same file to my iphone and ipad and nada.

Yet, I have no problem with pictures.

How do you send files through iMessage to your ipad?

You can send pictures or videos by tapping the little camera icon to the left of the iMessage field.

What is your goal? Sharing files with yourself? Or others?

I have no problem sending picures or video. I would like to know how to send files, if possilbe, through imessage, .doc, .txt, .pages. (file

The goal is to send files.

you can drag files to the text bar to send. just send a pdf to my wife's iphone from my iMac.

Yes, pdf's work as expected. epubs, and others do not work. So, I guess there are certain files it will not work with.

Yes, that works from mac to mac. That is a wonderful feature.

I did find Apple's list of supported files and it is not complete. It did not list PDF as a supported file so I suspect there are others. I am afraid that epub and some others that would make life easier are not supported at this time. I did find reference to where the file i on the ipad but you have to jailbreak your iphone and/or ipad to do that and I am not interested in doing that.

Ok... I had the same problem. So I thought simple. Convert your video to MP4 format. iMessage is originally an IOS app, it works with IOS video format. MP4

Try it. It will work.

This seems to be a copy and paste of the post I made in this very thread on July 6, 2013. But without crediting me.

Thank you!

I was able to drag my mp4 file into the iMessage text box to send video.

Simple, just drag and drop.

Yes BUT does not seem to work in an environment where the recipient's phone is not on iMessage; the PDF will not send via SMS in iMessage.

You can't share files using SMS. SMS is an extremely basic protocol that only sends text.
