iTunes 12.7 app sync/backup confusion
I just downloaded the new iTunes 12.7 on my iMac. Like many, I am/was confused by the new interface which eliminates Apps. I understand app purchases can be re-downloaded from the App Store, but I'm concerned/wondering about backups. When I plug my iPhone into my iMac, launch iTunes, and click "Back Up Now" the older versions of iTunes would copy and store my Apps as well as their location and folders from my iPhone. If/When I needed to perform a "Restore" (either a problem with iPhone or NEW iPhone) iTunes would make my device (iPhone) look and feel the exact same way. If iTunes is no longer syncing APPs, how do you backup your iPhone???
This has got to be the least thought out change that apple has ever made. No information as to how to organize your apps ( other then on the phone ). Just have to wait for 11 to come out and hope we can do it then.
I'm not sure how I feel about this yet because I don't have all the answers. Change can sometimes be hard. Not trying to Apple bash here. Just want to figure out what's what.
They remove a feature ( useful to some ) from a major application and then tell us to wait until the next OS release to get that feature back. Maybe someone should have said " Lets wait till we can release them both". This is something that happens over in the Windows World, it should not happen on this side of the fence.
I always had that warm fuzzy feeling knowing that if anything
happened with my iPhone, I had a full local backup of my device
that I could restore.
Now, part of that restoration will be sitting there waiting for the
many gigs worth of apps to download from the internet and hope
that it doesn't go down before all the apps are downloaded.
Which brings up a point, with the "new strategy" what does happen
if something happens to interrupt the app restore part of the process?
Like the App Store goes down (of course that never happens, wink) or
any other reason the network connection is broken.
Not sure whether new apps are stored into the iTunes media folder.
Some smart guys figured out that you don't need to backup your apps since you're always online, which is wrong. What do you do if you're abroad, you have limited or no roaming data plan, no wifi, travel in developing countries without infrastructure,s you're in a train, a plane, in the middle of nowhere, etc...? Well those smart guys think this never happens, just like earthquakes never occur over week-ends, etc.
Pathetic.
There has to be some sort of backup function somewhere. What happens when we get a new phone and go to restore from a previous backup? Will our apps not be there and we have to re-download and organize them again? Will the revised app store have a separate backup and restore area? Kinda makes me not want to get a new phone.
