MacBook Pro startup problems

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro that I can't get booted up since an update yesterday.  The progress bar goes so far then only white screen.  On my external drive I can get to log in & password then same thing, except screen goes black then white.  Same with time machine. Progress bar only goes so far.  Tried all the startup options & get the same white screen In the end. Ran the hardware test 4 times.  Says all is good.  Anything else I can try? Thanks!
