Panic Kernel at Start

Since installing Mac Sierra 10.12.4, the very next day and at nearly every daily startup since (95% of the time) I initially get a panic kernel screen immediately.  I force a shutdown and restart the Mac and I proceed to a normal load and startup.  The Panic Kernel only occurs at startup after the mac has been sitting and never on the second startup attempt immediately following the failed startup.  On the same day I installed macOS 10.12.4, I also installed Xcode 8.3.2.  I can use the two step startup workaround as I usually only start the mac once a day but it is getting irritating.  I did disconnect all USB devices and the problem persisted.  Is there a smoking gun out there associated with macOS 10.12.4 or Xcode 8.3.2 causing these startup panic kernels?

You should be able to use <https://pastebin.com/> and put a pointer in here if you want to post that SMART report.

With respect to 3TB Seagate drive

  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate     0x000f   117   093   006    Pre-fail  Always       -       152779320

  7 Seek_Error_Rate         0x000f   087   060   030    Pre-fail  Always       -       4805630705

  9 Power_On_Hours          0x0032   077   077   000    Old_age   Always       -       20533

Or about 7,000 read errors per hour.

Since you Mac has not rolled over and died, the disk drive is fixing those errors using either ECC (Error Correcting Codes) or retires.

The Seek errors generally mean it took more than one try position the disk's read head over the correct track.  That is more on the order of 200,000 seek errors per hour.  That might be affecting your performance when using that drive.

Is your iMac setup with a Fusion Drive configuration, or has the Fusion configuration been removed, and they are now just 2 separate storage devices?   And if so, which is the boot device?

Generally in a Fusion configuration, the SSD is where the writes initially go (then get slowly migrated to the rotating disk), and more frequently used files are kept on the SSD, including the boot files so the Mac boots faster.

If you do not find the root cause of your kernel panics, you might want to consider making a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple store and have them evaluation your system, especially looking at your disks.

Uninstall Symantec and Memory Clean as per developer's instructions. No anti-virus or cleaning apps are necessary or recommended on Mac OS. Symantec has been crippling Mac systems for decades. (Just dragging to Trash is not uninstalling)

While the anti-virus is the most likely candidate, it might be useful to post a few of the kernel panic reports

Kernel Panic reports: Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

<https://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546>

<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553>

The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

I did try both options but it did not correct the problem.  I surmised that it may be the hard drive.  When I do a cold start the problem always occur.  When I turn off the Mac and then turn it back on before the hard drive spins down, it starts normally.  I have experimented turning the computer on but before panic kernel message occurs, I turn of the computer and then turn back on in quick succession to start normally.  So it may be the boot sector of the hard drive has a problem or something that happened to the boot sector during the install of Mac OS 10.12.4 on 4/8/17.  Not sure where this leaves me except possibly replacing the hard drive.

I surmised that it may be the hard drive.

If you suspect the boot disk, then you could run EtreCheck again and collect the S.M.A.R.T. data

The S.M.A.R.T. data may or may not be useful, but until it is seen, we will not know.

This is the report for disk1 and there are errors but I can't interpret the seriousness of the errors:

The disk0 report has invalid characters that generate an error message every time I try to post a reply.  But there were no error messages in the text that I could see.

Many thanks for your efforts and analysis.  I agree, I need to make a Genius Bar appointment. I recall that in 2015 that there was an Apple recall for the 3TB disk drives for Apple Macs made in late 2012 in which some were failing.  Since my disk drive was working fine, I decided to defer replacing the drive but now I wish I had replaced it. Maybe they will still replace it but my guess is the recall program has long ago ended.  First I need to do a full backup.  Thanks again.

This problem has popped up now that we have upgraded our 2012 iMac 27" w/3TB Fusion to Sierra. It was an upgrade from Yosemite.  After the problem manifested, we even tried a wipe and install via Apple Network Install (Option-Command-R).

We have discovered that holding down Option at start-up and choosing the disk avoids the panic.

Machine is out of warranty, so if we take it in, the ^%(%^* Fusion drive is coming out!!  It has been nothing but a headache.  Just give me a PURE SSD!!!
