Time machine is not backing up automatically

Time machine has quit making backups automatically, but will do it manually....sometimes, although I have no clue why it does or does not work. I am using mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro with western digital My Passport for Mac. Running Mac OS Sierra 10. I am using a new Western Digital My Passport for Mac, 2.5T still available.

Does this issue only exist for your MacBook Pro? Was Time Machine working before and stopped doing automatic backups recently or has it never worked properly? I am assuming that you have the WD My Passport directly connected to your MBP via USB ... correct?
