Cannot open music on Iphone using Watch

Since the update I can no longer open music on my iphone using my watch. I used it kind of like a remote with siri controlling my music on the phone. The only way it works is if music is already on and playing on my phone first. When I try to open music on my watch it only tries to look for headphones to pair with.  I used this functionality daily before the update and am upset I can no longer do it. Is there a setting or something I have to configure?

watchOS 4.x includes the Now Playing app. When playing supported audio on your iPhone (whether via the Music app or a third-party app), Now Playing is shown automatically in the Dock on your Apple Watch and can be used to control playback on your iPhone.

 

If desired, Now Playing can be added to the Dock permanently and/or added to a watch face as a complication.
