Connecting iOS app to a hardware over wifi and ...

I am trying to develop an iOS app connects to a hardware over wifi and the hardware acts like an access point! I am not sure where or how to start this. I appreciate any tutorials, source codes or tips that will help me start the project. I am really in need for help on this.

My understanding is they need the app to communicate with the hardware to get data from and send data to it. You can think about it as a medical device that send analytics or reading to the mobile app, and at some point the app might control the hardware as well!
