gmail inbox emails going to bin

This is a recurring problem: I have Macbook Air, Yosemite 10.10.5, using Mail. I have a gmail account. Every so often the Mail inbox stops functioning, all I get is a new mail sound. I've learnt this means the settings aren't working so I have to log into my gmail account on my browser (firefox) and check for incoming emails. They are usually in the Bin. My settings do not change as far as I can tell. I use IMAP (no POP), inbox set as primary (no labels), no filters or rules. All I want is my incoming emails to be forwarded to my Mail program. It seems to me Gmail does not learn my preferences based on my past actions at all.

My Mail preferences included 'password' port 993 using SSL. IMAP path prefix blank. All reference to the web brings forth only info on the settings identified above. What else can I do? I want to stop this recurring - is it a matter of updates? I have the latest updates but no change to mailbox behaviours. Quiting, etc doesn't work either.
