So then basically I just can't download any apps on the iPad I mean because it's too old or what???

There are not very many apps that will still work on that old a version of iOS. It may be time to think about upgrading.

There are still apps in the store whose current version requires iOS 5.1.1 or lower e.g. Finding iOS Apps Compatible with Older Devices - Apple Club

Or if an app is in your account's purchase history (download it on your computer's iTunes if it's not ) you might be able to download an older compatible version via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on the iPad (if the app is paid-for check with the developer whether they support older versions and iOS 5.1.1) : Install an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support

That’s probably it. Most developers drop support for older versions of iOS at some point, as costs of maintaining compatibility become too high (especially after introduction of Swift, which is a whole new programming language).
