iMac no longer can access external backup and r...

I used to backup and recover my files using time machine on my external drive but now it cannot find these files so it can not update or recover them. Even when using disk utility it does not list these external files but it did in the past. Could it be that a new version of OS is causing this or could it be the device is no longer working even though the light goes on it or could it be the iMac?
