How do I cancel downloads?

I have a pair of downloads pending for applications I do not use on my Mac. Every day, I get a message in the corner of the screen, asking me whether I'm ready to download them and restart. There is no choice to decline the downloads entirely. If I tell it to ask me later, it does, but that only postpones the annoyance to another day.

Curiously, when I relent and try to download them, I enter my ID and password, but it keeps coming back with the password cue. I thought perhaps it was asking for my password for each download, but I have been asked and provided my password up to 10 times and it still keeps asking. There is no text explaining why it is asking over and over, e.g. "incorrect password" or "downloading <application X>" or whatever. So I have no clue why it keeps asking. (It is not the incorrect password by the way, unless the download module has internally stored the password I had in place when these cues first began.)

How do I get rid of these download requests?
