Can the series 3 watch be used for free diving?

I would love to buy it if I could take it 40 feet below the water. It would be really cool if there was an App for measuring depth and breath holds easily.

Hi

No, it can't.

Apple Watch Series 3 is only suitable for wear during shallow water activities and should not be submerged below shallow depths:

40 feet is considered shallow.

Apple Watch has a max depth of 50 meters. Which is well beyond the 40 foot mark.

Apple Watch Series 2 and Apple Watch Series 3 have a water resistance rating of 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010.

I'm afraid that you are entirely mistaken.

The water resistance rating does not mean that Apple Watch can be used to a depth of up to 50 metres. My previous reply refers.

Correct, its not generally a direct limit, but it is a general area of usage.

40 feet is for all intents and purposes shallow, and a 50m water resistant watch should be able to to taken to that depth just fine.

The difference is the pressure and activity, though at 40 feet or 12m deep pressure and movement are not a big factor.

Many of my diver friends wear Apple Watches and can swim fine at 10 to 15 meters and the watches have not suffered any ill effects.

The water resistance is a general somewhat vague indication, due to the nature of the ISO testing. But at shallow depths , and pressures the general status is it can be used to swim and dive in shallow water.  40 feet is still shallow.

For deeper dives, more resistant watches need to be worn.

50m is not a "general area of usage".

To claim that "50m water resistant watch should be able to to taken to that depth just fine" is appallingly bad advice and, if relied upon, may cost users the price of their Apple Watch along with the cost of AppleCare+, if they have also purchased it.

Please desist from posting any further misinformation.
