How do I use iCloud to save space on my computer?

I am using the latest OS 10.!2.6 I have two drives, one is my OS on a SSD the second is for all documents. I am looking to save space on both drives and back up documents to the cloud.

Currently my understanding: when I move a document to the iCloud folder it is copied to my OS drive then the cloud. If I remove the document from my OS drive it is removed from the cloud. This duplicates documents and does not save space. Am I better off with Drop Box?
