USB drives not showing in finder
Hi I have tried a number of different brand USB drives but none show in finder. I have check in the profiler and they show there. I have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.x. I am relatively new to Macs so all constructive suggestions welcome.

Thanks for responding so promptly Yes this box is checked.
What MacBook?
Are you connecting directly to the MBP, or through a hub?
Do they show in Disk Utility?
Are these drives low capacity thumb drives (eg, 4GB) or high capacity (eg, 500GB)?
These drives are plugged in directly. I have a choice of two ports. When I plug in the activity light goes then stops. I have only tried 4gb or smaller.
Do they show in Disk Utility?
Are you using a USB powered drive? In other words the USB drive does not have a external AC power adapter?
This is a ongoing problem. Some, really most, notebooks, whether Mac or PC, do not put out enough power on the USB ports to power these type of drives. Some work but some, most, don't.
You can buy a USB Y cable that connects to 2 USB ports at the same time giving the drive more power.
Other then that if the drive is listed in Disk Utility you may need to partition and format it before the drive will show in Finder.
But to my knowledge most of these external drive come formatted in one way or another so that any operating system, Mac or Windows, can see them as soon as they are connected.
HI, I have specifically bought usb drives that are supposedly formated for both Mac (10.6.X) and PC. My feeling is that it must be a setting or something. I have windows loaded on the same machine and run parallels6 and the drive show up know problem so I don't think it is a power issue. I just really want to be able to plug it in with the Mac software running only.
Do they show in Disk Utility, or not?
No they are not - just the HD and DVD drives
So they show up in System Profiler, but not in Disk Utility.
Post the info on one of them from System Profiler. For instance, if I attach a SanDisk Cruzer through a hub, I get something like this
USB2.0 Hub:
Product ID: 0x0608
Vendor ID: 0x05e3 (Genesys Logic, Inc.)
Version: 77.64
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Location ID: 0xfd120000 / 4
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 100
Cruzer Edge:
Product ID: 0x556b
Vendor ID: 0x0781 (SanDisk Corporation)
Version: 1.03
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: SanDisk
Location ID: 0xfd121000 / 8
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 200
(But delete the serial number, if any, or anything else of that kind.)
Yes, that is correct - showing in profiler but not in disk utility
This is a lexar jumpdrive 70s
JumpDrive:
Product ID: 0xa201
Vendor ID: 0x05dc (Lexar Media, Inc.)
Version: 11.00
Serial Number: AAOVD4E9LKLC1RV0
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Lexar
Location ID: 0xfa130000 / 6
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 200
That's a tough one, because everything seems normal (btw, did you install any Lexar software?).
I'd've said, try a different brand, but you've already tried that.
Let's try to isolate the problem. In Terminal, issue the command
$ diskutil list
(where $ is your prompt). Does the listing contain anything that could be the USB drive? If yes, please post it.
Yes I have tried HP100v, Sandisk Cruiser & today's purchase the lexar s70.
here is the screen grab from the Terminal. I ran it twice with the s70 in each port.

Unfortunately, I don't know what the problem is, so the following is a bit of a scatter-gun approach.
Self-powered hub.
It is possible (not likely, perhaps a tad more likely if your MBP is a 13″ one) that there's an issue with USB power. If you have one, try connecting a thumb drive through a self-powered hub, ie, one with a separate power supply (not a bus-powered hub).
New user.
Create a new admin user account. Restart and log in as the new user.
Try a thumb drive. If it shows up in Disk Utility, no need to perform the other steps.
Safe Mode.
Shut down, then start in Safe Mode, as described here
<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455>
Try a thumb drive again. Then restart as usual (the first start after Safe Mode takes longer; that is normal). Try the thumb drive once more.
Reset NVRAM.
It is possible (not likely) that a setting in NVRAM is causing an error. Follow the instructions here
<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379>
to reset NVRAM.
Reset the SMC.
Follow the instructions below
<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964>
