Restoring to a different OS version

I am trying to restore a backup on a new iPad. Each restore accessed on the new iPad tells me th e backup can’t be restored because the OS’s don’t match. I’m stuck, had to alternately set up as a new iPad.

If you upgraded to iOS 11 and you‘re trying to restore from a backup of an earlier version, then it’s not going to work.  You are only going to be able to setup as new iPad.  You would have to essentially update to iOS 11 without wiping it.  Then backup the iPad after updating the OS, then you would be able to restore from that backup.

Set up the iPad as a new device, with your existing Apple ID, then update it to the newest iOS version. After it’s updated, you can restore the backup.

THen do it that way.

If your backup, let’s say, is iOS11 and the iPad you’re tryign to set up is at iOS10, what you need to do is set the iPad up first as a new iPad, then immediately update it to iOS11, then you can restore your backup to your iPad.

Basically you have to take that extra step to set it up as new so you can update the iOS, then restore the backup of your old iPad to your new one.

Note: Backup do not backup iOS.

1. Backup made with older iOS version can be used to restore to an iPhone with a higher iOS.

2. Backup made with later iOS version cannot be used to restore to an iPhone with a lower iOS version.

With number 2. the iPhone must update iOS first to be same or newer iOS than the backup.
