2011 iMac slow after latest OS Sierra Update
Hi everyone
I updated to the latest OS Sierra for my iMac at the weekend. Now it's running painfully slow. Anyone else having the same problem and any ideas as to how to fix please? Thanks in advance
Find out what's wrong with your Mac so that you can fix it. To begin troubleshooting read below.
Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.
Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been.
Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.
Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.
Let me know what you determine.
Mine ran slow too since I only had 4GB of RAM...
(27 inch mid 2011 IMAC)
After buying a kit that included 2 4GB wafers and installing them
I now have 12 GB using all 4 slots and Sierra seems to run fine.
(despite various quirks which Apple will eventually fix)
NOTE: crashes are generally due to low quality RAM...
Buy original Crucial memory....costs less than $50 for an 8GB kit
Without more specific information, it is hard to tell.
Like Bart said, it could be you need more RAM; it could be temporary (as a lot of processing may be going on, including Spotlight indexing your whole drive). Or it could be some software that you had installed needs to be updated and is not working properly in the new OS.
You may want to run Etrecheck and post its report here, so we can know more about your hardware and software.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to answer my problem. Every time I try and open software or use the OS I get the spinning wheel of death! It's a bit out of my depth the problem so I think I am going to get someone to look at the iMac, fingers crossed! Thanks again I appreciate it
Got the same "spinning, colour wheel of death" you described, since upgrading to Sierra I've been through everything listed above with multiple Apple specialists, they've given up, ...one told me I needed a new iMac!
I'm in the process of upgrading/ expanding memory from 4GB to 12GB and installing an SSD to try to compensate for the what appears to be a bloated Sierra OS (10.12.06) , on my mid 2011 27" iMac (12,2).
Sierra pretty much demands an SSD.
Unless there is some other issue, you are about to find that you just got a new mac.
