firefox crash after installing sierra

Does anyone have experience of this, or is it just me? I just installed Sierra, which messed up many things, among which Firefox is very unstable, freezes within seconds (spinning pizza/beachball - whatever it is) so I can do nothing but force quit.

Any wisdom gratefully received.

It sounds like Firefox may not be up to date.

If your startup page OR an add-on is the cause of the problem, hold the SHIFT key down while it starts up

Hi,

Thanks for your thoughts, but that's the first thing I did. It's the latest version. I'd never thought of holding down the shift key, though; does that turn off the add-ons?

I tried, it didn't make any difference, sadly :-(

When you did SHIFT key safe mode, was it clear that your succeeded in doing so? (It should be obvious, and possibly even "alert you" that it is doing so)

You should really take this up at Mozilla since it is Firefox misbehaving

Ah, I thought you meant when starting Firefox, not the Mac. No, I haven't done that, I'll give it a try and report back...

Cheers.

I DID mean Firefox, but restarting the Mac in Safe Mode MAY help tell you if there are any non-Apple startup items interfering

Restart Mac in Safe = Test

Restart Mac normally = Test

BOTH of these restarts do stuff

I personally would try uninstalling Firefox app (leaving User Data) and getting a fresh copy of FF installed before I went too much further

I would try a new profile…

one step at a time?

My money is on an outdated FF add-on, but I lose as much as I win bets

One step at a time is fine.

Safe Mode FF effectively creates a "default user" anyway

Next would be [Refresh Firefox] button in Help > Troubleshooting Info window (if natvis can get there!) - this "sandboxes" the User Data and add-ons that can be manually added back from the "Old" folder

But I am all cart-before-the-horse now!

Blimey! Thanks to all. I've already trashed Firefox an got a new version. No difference. I'll get round to one or two of the more esoteric suggestions later - I'm out of the country tomorrow for a week, so running out of time.

I'm grateful, thank you.

I suppose a more detailed description is in order - with timing for each action

In other words, paint us a mental picture of every single event and the results

If you would take this up with Mozilla, it might be best

It is possible that upgrading to Sierra is merely coincidental with Firefox updating - which causes an incompatibility with an installed FF add-on

If you insist that you get the misbehavior in BOTH safe mode in Sierra AND Firefox and BOTH combined, it cannot be a Firefox issue

BTW, I was having this problem this morning with Firefox crashing-on-launch on macOS 10.12.5, and I tried simply starting FF from the command line:

> /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin &

..and it started right up (I launched it from a tcsh shell).  I guess when I'm next forced to restart (sigh) I'll re-try launching using "Firefox.app".

I have been using Firefox for years.  However!  I am just fed up watching this spinning pinwheel.  Just not worth it anymore.  Apple told me that third party apps have not caught up with Sierra, and even my Adobe apps are problematical.  Easy solution is just go Chrome until the situation corrects itself without having to jump through hoops trying to get Firefox to work as before.  Maybe the issue will resolve itself down the road.
