Extra sent messages

I have the same question that was asked in 2008 by someone else. I notice there was no good answer. On Mac Mail I have a message at the bottom of the application (left side) saying "Sending 5 of 5 messages" and yet I have no messages in the queue--all have been sent. It isn't particularly slowing down my MacBook Pro but seeing it there is irritating because it makes me question if my emails have actually been sent! I then have to go on the web to check it online and, yes the items were sent. Yet is still is saying "Sending 5 of 5 messages" in my Mac Mail application.

This has been happening for quite some time. I am up to date on my operating system.

How do I remedy this?
