macbook air screen and external monitor black o...

If I leave the external monitor plugged in to the laptop turn it off and then turn it back on the laptop screen and the external monitor are black with no cursor.  If I unplug the external monitor prior to turning the laptop on it starts up normally.  I'm assuming this is just a setting somewhere, but I have been unable to find where.
