Keyboard problems with Sienna

I've just upgraded my 27" late 2012 iMac to OS 10.12.16. The keyboard works fine for a while, then starts to lag and show alternate symbols above the letters that finally appear. Has anyone had the problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sienna is a area in Italy, however if you are referring to Sierra then please do a SMC reset, this may take 2-3 attempts.
