Gmail Terminates Mail app in OSX

Seems as though Gmail IMAP is killing the Mail app in OSX. I have restarted my iMac as well as trying safe mode, but Mail will not stay active for more than a few seconds before it errors out.

I can easily add Hotmail to the Mail app with no crash, but the moment I add Gmail, the Mail app attempts to synchronise and shuts down. Then a report window appears with this as the first part:
