New iTunes miniplayer too big

My Mac just auto-updated to the new version of iTunes (12.6.0.95) and suddenly the miniplayer window is double the previous size, maybe larger. There doesn't seem to be any way to resize it. I can hide the album artwork but even then it still shows a progress bar at the full new width, and tall enough to cover icons I have arranged on my desktop— and showing the album artwork is what I want from it in any case, with pop-up controls when I mouse over it. A progress bar for the song being played is no use at all and that now seems impossible to get rid of.

Is there any way to customize the size of the miniplayer, so it displays a reduced-sized version of the album artwork, as it did previously?

its a really bad and broken update, lets hope they fix it fast or hopefully revert back

I found the same thing with cover art and the However, after a few minutes, I found, at least on my Windows version, that if you hover the mouse pointer near the top of the mini player, the arrow changes, and you can click and hold, then drag upwards to reveal the cover art, and the . It isn't everything you were looking for, but it is a start.

As suggested by ChrisJ4203, re-sizing the mini player also brings back the close button on Mac. Clicking the search or "up next" icons (bottom right) also works. If the mini player is selected (i.e. iTunes menu showing) you can always close it and reopen the main iTunes window by pressing CMD-W (presumably ALT-F4 on Windows?)

Sizing the mini player almost square seems to put it in a mode where the controls will disappear after a while to just show the artwork, and sizing taller than that will leave the controls under the artwork.

Or perhaps something like BarTunes might help?

There's no problem making the close button show (in fact I've done that, preferring no window open at all to the new miniplayer taking up so much screenspace. The problem is that the album artwork is huge and can't be shrunk. There's an option to hide "large album artwork" but no option to pick "medium" or "small" artwork instead, nor to resize it by dragging the window.

I can reduce the window vertically but the artwork doesn't shrink, the window just only shows a piece of it, and even then I can't reduce it horizontally, so I end up with a wide bar showing the controls and nothing else. I do see the controls will vanish if the window's left alone, and reappear when I mouse over it, which is good-- that's how it used to work, thank goodness they didn't change everything-- but if I want album artwork showing I'm still stuck with only a very large non-mini player.

I have the same problem why did they mess with this? Before the update I could make the mini player real small so it was out of the way, now it's got to be 10 times bigger! I want my old mini player back.

Situation seems to be either/or. Either you have the huge mini-player with big album art or you go to top/bottom, hover near the edge until an arrow appears, and you move the mini-player up (or the album art down) till the album art is gone. Leaving you with a small window of just controls. Personally, I don't like this at all. I liked have small album art and the ability to size the mini-player as I liked. I don't like having to choose either a window with huge album art or no album art and just dull controls. I do hope they change this and fast.

My mistake. The aim seems to be to allow a person to expand the mini player, when desired, to view all kinds of things one might want to view (artwork, what's up next). You can size the window (wait for an arrow to appear at top or bottom) or go for the three dots on the right side of the controls. There are "hide/show" options for album art or "up next."

The minimalist window offers what's playing, album title and the song's timed progress when left alone. If you're pointing at it, then the controls come up. Play, back, forward, etc. as well as the "up next" list option and those three dots giving you even more options.

Personally, I liked having small album art and the ability to size the mini-player as I liked. But I get that they want to offer the users a chance to open the window to all kinds of controls and options and have it at the bare minimum the rest of the time. I would still wish I didn't have to see the huge album art if I want to see the album art on the mini player.

Agreed.  Apple has successfully pushed me to no longer use MiniPlayer.

We had a good relationship for years; I enjoyed looking at it and it was unobtrusive and stayed out of the way.  I wanted things to stay where they were but it wanted bigger and larger things.  In the end, we grew apart and I had to call it quits.  Every once and a while, I might look it up to see if it's changed.  You know, be like "hey, I miss you.  Wanna give it another go?"  But for now, we're officially on a break.

I have the same problem. The mini player is too big. And I would like to be able to resize like before. I miss the artwork and opening it in this new update leaves a much bigger footprint on my display (I guess Apple had retina displays in mind?). Finally, when you want to skip to next track, the titles disappear (on hover) and you have to do a mouse-out for moment just to see what track is now selected.

I am having the same issues. I hate the new MiniPlayer window. It's bigger but it is missing the small thumbnail of the cover art. And I cannot maximize it again by clicking the small circle with the X. That is not available unless I choose Minimize Large Artwork, even tho it is not showing, and then the X shows. I hope this buggy behavior gets fixed. I also hope they redesign this bad UI for the mini player window.

Double Click the extreme bottom boundary on the mini player to hide the bottom bar

They've pushed me to not use iTunes at all - it's the least Apple-like piece of software Apple has even produced (on Windows, macOS, and Music on iOS). The menus are bizarrely organized and I it takes multiple clicks just to adjust the volume, where I am then treated to multiple sliders even though I have a single audio output. It's awful.

At work, I actually plug in my Android phone to my speakers because it's easier for me to control the music with an extra device. Thanks, Apple. I've converted my entire musical collection to mp3 and mp4 so I can listen to it wherever I want - a process that lasted over several months here and there.

And now for the only constructive part of this rant ... I've started using QuickTime player for listening to streams. It's window is smaller, but it packs more information in there, uses half the CPU, does not change oddly when I hover over it, and it has more controls without extra clicking. I even made Alfred workflows to open my favorite streams and set a default volume.
