MacBook Pro Touch ID not working!!

I just got my MacBook Pro yesterday ( with Touch ID). I have already set up everything and it is working fine. Today morning, when I open macbook, in login page, it doesn't ask me to use Touch ID already. Setting is okay but it doesn't ask in my login screen. I just delete all finger data and shut down. It is not okay. It just doesn't ask when I login to computer. How shall I do?

As stated here under "Get Started":

"Every time you start up or restart, you need to type your password to log in.  After that, you can use Touch ID ..."

Use Touch ID on MacBook Pro - Apple Support

Thanks. I have entered my password for first time. and I logout of device. After that, when I login , it ask password again. Actually, it should ask touch id already.

When I receive my laptop on first day, it is okay. But on second day, I think its damage appear and not working already.

It say that 'unlocking  your mac'. I think for my macbook, I always see loading bar on start up. By right, I should not see that one right? (unless some hardware damage..i might be wrong. but i don't normally see)

I have the same problem. My Touch ID stopped working and actually produced and error when I unchecked and then checked again the Touch ID "Unlock your Mac" option in System Preferences which produced the error "com.apple.Biometrics error 1.". I called Apple support to help out. They were very helpful but could not resolve the problem. In fact, the problem persisted when we created a new Admin account to test Touch ID. We could enter a new fingerprint but Touch ID would not permit us to unlock the machine. Very strange.

I believe that in my case it could be a software issue/bug, perhaps caused by Activity Monitor. Touch ID worked again a day later after I quit Activity Monitor and restarted my MacBook Pro 15". Looking back I think the problems started when Activity Monitor crashed. Since then it crashes randomly so I quit using it. Hope now that Touch ID will keep working and will report back if that is not the case and if any remedies exist.

I have the same issue.  Got my MBP on 12/9.  Only had time to go through set up process, which included the fingerprint setup.  I then closed the lid (sleep) and came back to it later in the day, at which time I used my finger to unlock.

Fast forward to the Monday morning,  I opened the laptop and it asked for my password.  I typed it in and it would not accept it.  I find it hard to believe that I mistyped it twice when I set it up.  So I had to go through the reset process, which I did.  I had to create a new keychain.  After that, I was never prompted for TouchId.  I deleted the finger and added a new one, still nothing.  I attempted to change settings on the TouchId and got a com.apple.biometric... error.

I haven't been asked to use the TouchId since.  Always have to enter the password.  *****.

I received my 15inch MBP on 12/25 and have the exact same problem with my Touch ID not working after the first day. It simply quit asking to provide Touch ID and asks for passwords every time. I've deleted and reset Touch ID fingerprints with same results. I have a Genius Bar appointment in 2 days. We'll see what they say.

Update** Went to my Genius Bar appointment tonight. Demonstrated the issue. Hardware checked ok on on their system. They turned off Touch ID, deleted the fingerprint, and re-set up Touch ID. Functionality returned when coming out of sleep mode but still does not prompt for Touch ID when purchasing from App Store or when using Apple Wallet. They suggested we replace the laptop to resolve the issue. They didn't have my model in stock. Currently awaiting it to be shipped to the store and they will notify me to come back and swap out. I appreciated the help, they guys were very good at the Tyson's corner VA Genius Bar, their help and expertise was much appreciated.

I have the same problem. Apple tech support is not able to resolve the issue. They are working on this for last few weeks and still they don't know what they are doing...

They are asking me to do "try this" and "try that", but still no progress in resolving the issue.

I found the only way Touch ID works to unlock your machine is when you have fast user switching turned on under user and groups options. that feature is turned off by default. once you have that turned on you can click your name on upper right and click log in screen, this will bring you to the log in prompt screen without actually logging out of the computer.  from there you can unlock your machine using the Touch ID.. other than that it seems to be unable to do it when you reboot or when you log out and try to log back in using touch id it simply doesn't prompt you on the touch bar.

I just got off the phone with Apple support and there may be a solution to some Touch ID issues...

After a shutdown or restart, you will have to enter a password, that is just a security issue with Apple I'm guessing.

The issue I was having was that I could not swap between different user accounts on my computer...the Touch ID and password option were not showing up so I would have to completely log out of one account in order to log in to another.  This may help for some issues:

- Shut down your computer.

- Hit "Shift", "Control", "Option" and the power button all at the same time and hold it for 15-20 seconds.  Nothing should happen, well, nothing that you will see anyway. (The key combination resets something with the Touch ID)

- Power on your computer normally and login as you usually would...now the Touch ID should work.

If it still doesn't work, try calling Apple, they were pretty quick and helpful when I contacted them.

I had this problem too.

When I first got my Mac, touch id worked fine. Then it all of a sudden stopped working. The touch bar simply did not ask me for a Touch Id, and I had to enter my password each time.

I managed to fix the problem in the following way:

  • In System Preferences, Touch ID, I unchecked the "Use Touch ID for:" "Unlocking your Mac".
  • Then I logged out.
  • Then I logged in.
  • Then I checked the "Use Touch ID for:" "Unlocking your Mac" again.

Then it worked again.

I fix it by reset the NVRAM.

hope this link answer would help you... I don't know why but I just give it a try and fixed

Unchecking all TouchID options and deleting all fingerprints fixed this problem for me!

I bought my Mac 4 months ago, and 2 days ago I did some updates, and after the updates the Touch ID was not asked in the log in anymore.  As normal thought I deleted the fingerprint, put a new one, but nothing!

Now I went to the system preferences and in the Touch ID area I unticked all the boxes, restart the pc, went again and ticked all the boxes this time, and restarted once more. After this it's working perfectly

Hope this works for you guys!
