macOS Sierra Screen Sharing very slow

Hello there,

after updating both my iMacs (2016 at home, 2011 at work) to macOS Sierra, the screen sharing function that was working like a charm until a few days before (in El Capitan) - has become somewhat unusable.

Both networks are connected through  a VPN with two professional routers, other connections (to a database server, a (windows) fileserver) work at the same speed as they ever did (also connecting to my old MacBook Pro, still running El Capitan works fine) - but whenever I try to connect via screen sharing, I can log in alright but then a click takes about 2 - 3 MINUTES until the machine reacts. Also keyboard input DOES work - but extremely delayed, for MINUTES (literally!) If I remote-control my old MBP w El Capitan over the same connection (yep, left it in the office overnight) - works fine.

Does anyone else have that, too? Is there something like deleting some ini files or something to try to get back to speed?

Best regards,

Jan

Now ... after a while I tried it again today and to my surprise - everything is back to normal. Now, both machines where upgraded to 10.12.3 in the meantime. Maybe this did the trick? I did not change anything in the router & other setup of both networks. So ... looks like they found & fixed something

Hello JRedepenning,

I understand that you are having an issue with Screen sharing being slow. I know how important it is to have you computer working correctly and I'm here to help.

Let's try Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. I have also included so great information on set up and using screen sharing.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

The nice part about safe mode is it performs checks and repairs any errors. After you start up in safe mode, please restart as normal and follow the instructions below to set up screen sharing again.

macOS Sierra: Set up and use screen sharing

Let me know if this help.
Have a great day!

Hello Courtney,

thank you for your quick answer - which I am answering quite late due to business travel

I have tried to start my office's iMac in safe mode - which actually took quite long. After that I rebooted and at first had the impression that it was a tiny bit better. But ... testing tonight again - troubles are still there. I really to have the impression that the "click-buffer" is filling up and then ... something happens and it takes AGES until the system wades through the clicks. I opened mail on the remote system - worked. I clicked a mail, perfect. I clicked a second mail - nothing happens. Now, from my experience two weeks ago, I just waited. Nothing happened until the screen went black (screen saver quite shortly set). I wiggled the mouse - screen re-awakens, and TADAA - the mail that I clicked before is highlighted alright. Another click somewhere - snappy response. Two or three clicks later - same procedure as before; wait until screen saver (black screen) - wiggle - expected result on screen.

Maybe it's not the "click-buffer" but a screen-refresh problem? In the sense that the clicks are actually executed as I click - but the screen doesn't update on my end? This is nothing I can really test - until I'm on holiday at home and someone else at the office, telling me on the phone what they see "live", right?

I'll be away from the office for 2 weeks soon - and I am dependent on the possibility to reach my office-computer. Downgrade to El Capitan - where I have used that feature A LOT in the last year? It's just so much work to do...

Best regards,

Jan

Just to chime in I've had a very similar experience.

Two Macs, same home network, wired ethernet. One is my main machine and other I access mainly through screen sharing, and it has always worked beautifully, almost as fast a working directly on the machine itself.

I updated both machines from El Capitan to Sierra and now the screen sharing sessions are very choppy, roughly 5 seconds to respond to clicks or keyboard input (previously was pretty much instant).

So IF we are experiencing the same issue, then your whole VPN setup etc. is not the issue.

File sharing speeds are the same between the machines and iTunes streaming is fine, so I don't suspect a connectivity issue.

I've done all the normal basic troubleshooting steps I can think of. Nothing in the console logs jumps out at me as a problem. Just wanted to add my two cents that you're not alone.

Thank you for your two cents!

In the meantime I've tried something else. I *stopped* the OS X screen sharing on my work computer and installed Parallels Access. I remember that working quite fine - but never needed it since the standard mechanisms where working very well. To my surprise I experience the very same behaviour! Works fine for a few clicks - but after about 10 - 15 clicks (or half double-clicks) the same choppy response times as from OS X screen sharing. As if some communication buffer fills up an gets stuck.

I am convinced now that it's not the VPN stuff. EVERYTHING else works fine as before (even remote controlling a win 10 machine that's unfortunately NOT running the software I need most) - but remote controlling my main work machine keeps stalling.

Now ... I'll be leaving the office for 2 weeks on a business trip, hoping that there'll be no situation that I have to get on top of while I'm away...

Waiting for the next update, hoping there'll be something in for me.

Bests,

Jan

I have this exact problem on a late 2012 mac mini i7.  After updating to Sierra, screen sharing to an X window session on my linux server at work is unusably slow -- many seconds to move a cursor or echo characters.  When I connect to the same linux server over the same VPN using terminal and ssh, the connection is quite snappy.  When I connect to the same X session and Linux server using my VNC on windows laptop, it is quite snappy, so the problem appears to be Screen Sharing.  Even re-sizing the Screen Sharing window is very slow.

Same problem here, too.  My setup:

At work: 3 headless Mac minis of various vintages, all previously running El Capitan, but now upgraded to Sierra 10.12.2.  These 3 macs do not have display spoofing plugs.

At home: MacBook Pro, retina, 15", mid 2014, Nvidia 750M graphics, MacOS Sierra 10.12.2. Accessing work LAN via Cisco VPN through 45 mb AT&T Uverse.

After upgrading these 4 machines to Sierra, screen sharing freezes very frequently for 5-15 seconds. No keystrokes seem to be lost during the freezes, and eventually register on the Mac minis. I hope Apple gets this big annoyance fixed soon.

Same here. Headless Mac Mini 2012 i5 which is running El Capitan 10.11.6 and my MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.2. Both are on the same local network. Screen sharing is virtually unusable. Lots of lag and unresponsiveness.

Same issue for me....not only lags but also a "Reconnecting" spinning icon after less than

a minute of connect time.

Hi Courtney, I have (44) 27" iMacs all having the same issue since our upgrade to Sierra. Is this the 'end' of Apple's support on this issue??

Hi Folks....

Just thought I'd also state I'm disgusted in the support on this topic from Apple......

Why are we paying for a premium product with sub-standard support and to keep now releasing products on this basis is shocking......  Sure seen a demise in Apple's ethos with the loss of Mr S Jobs ........

Come on Apple.  Stop cashing in and start dishing out support and better products......

Now ... after a while I tried it again today and to my surprise - everything is back to normal. Now, both machines where upgraded to 10.12.3 in the meantime. Maybe this did the trick? I did not change anything in the router & other setup of both networks. So ... looks like they found & fixed something

I have still the same Problem. Two iMacs (2016 and 2017) with new System 10.12.6 have super slow screen sharing.
