How do I watch my iTunes purchases (tv series &...
I have bought some tv series and movies from iTunes. I can watch them on my iMac and also on my iPad. The problem is we recently bought a smart tv and want to watch these programs on it. For some reason these are locked and I cannot do this. Is there a way that I can gain access to this? I do not have an Apple TV. I understand that this would allow me to do this.
I am not trying to do anything illegal I just want to watch my own purchases in my own home but not on my computer or my ipad.
If I cannot do this I will never buy tv series or movies from the itunes store again.
Some of the newer mac laptops enable an HDMI connection which would work with your TV. I do not think iMacs do. Other than purchasing Apple TV 3 because iTunes Movies and TV shows are protected you could not play them excpet for streaming through an Apple TV
Personally I have my Apple TV hooked up a 46" Samsung LED and Onkyo Sound System and the movies in 1080p look and sound great. For the cost of £99 in the UK $99 in the US it seems a small price to pay to be able to sit back in the chair and watch on my TV
Sorry I could not help more
Thanks so much for reply Steve.
I didn't want to have to spend extra money on Apple TV when I have a fantastic Smart TV that plays other stuff I've bought elsewhere. It is disappointing. It's not like I'm trying to do something illegal. I just want to stream stuff off my iMac to my TV. I do not want to distribute it to others.
I guess I've learned a good lesson - I'll never buy stuff from iTunes again. Apple really is shooting itself in the foot with having there stuff locked.
So it's Apple's fault that you bought the wrong thing.
No Winston Churchill, it's not Apple's fault. It's my fault for not doing my research prior to buying movies and tv series from iTunes. I love my apple products just not that I'd have to purchase Apple TV if I want to watch those purchases on anything but my iMac or my ipad.
Ah the direct approach.
Hey Winston I was born and brought up in Bispham and spent many hours in the Thatched refreshing to get back to straightforward
How peculiar. My wife is from Bispham (Beaufort Avenue & Monty high school) but was originally from Heald Green (Elmsliegh Road).
I'm only around 500 yds from the Thatched (straight line) but have only been in there 2 or 3 times myself (I'm a landlord at Poulton Business Park and prefer not to bump into my tenants out of hours, so usually do my drinking down South Shore).
Small World.

I totally agree with you @olibear! I have spent alot of money on itunes downloading tv shows and all i want to do is play them on my tv (not a smart tv). Is there really no way to transfer them to an external hard drive and play through the USB port on my tv? I also am not trying to do anything illegal!
Maybe I don't get the question, but can't you just hook a mini display port adapter to your iMac and plug an HDMI cable into it and send the signal to your television? Works great with my Mac mini and my macbook air. I've never oned an iMac, but they certainly must have a display port.
I second that! Here's what I tried: I ran a HDMI cable from my computer to my TV, and the TV shows did play (on the TV)....but with no sound. I guess I could plug some speakers into my computer to get the sound while I watch the TV but how far do I take this? Won't be buying any more TV shows or movies from Apple.
UPDATE! I ran a HDMI cable from my computer to my TV and this time it worked fine, got sound and everything. The first time I tried this it was on a different TV (Element). This time I hooked it up to my Sharp Aquos and it worked fine. Hope this helps.
100% agree with your "shooting themselves in the foot comment." I have spent quite a bit elsewhere because of these issues. I love itunes set-up, but to pay an extra $100 just to watch what you have already purchased when I could get (and did get) a roku for $35 makes no sense and now with smart TVs - completely illogical. Apple if you are listening, this week alone your requirement for an apple TV stopped me from buying $80 of movies (which would have completely been an impulse buy with your sale). Oops!, but thank you for helping me save for retirement (many years away)! (Change it and you will have a customer for life).
Somthing like PLEX Server for Mac will allow you to setup 'channels' which can pass through iTunes/Apple content from iTunes. Your smart TV can then see the PLEX server and play the content, hopefully....
I have never tried this as I have a ATV doing the job so it may or may not work. i 'll give it a go at home tonight and see.
FYI. Plex does state clearly that it cannot play itunes content, but given a couple other places saying to try it, I did. Nope. Shame for immediate gratification. Win for savings.
