Mac Pro + QNAP Nas Connection

Background: I purchased a QNAP TS 431 in february to store my ever expanding photo library and I recently upgraded to a Mac Pro 6 Core desktop to perform what i need to be able to do with post processing and editing at high speeds.

I am a college student and have the NAS and Mac pro sitting at my desk in my apartment. I also have a Macbook that i use on a daily basis when i am out and about or on campus in the library (basically whenever i am not home). I have a photo library catalog in Adobe Lightroom and all my photos are stored on the NAS which i connect to with the desktop via SMB connection in the finder. When i log into the SMB i can access my photos and folders inside my finder as if it were a folder on my desktop and my catalog in lightroom functions as normal.

Issue: In my apartment, everything works fine but i want a method of connecting to my QNAP via my macbook remotely with the same connection method so that it appears as if the NAS were a folder in my finder just as it is on my desktop in my apartment. What do i need to do so that i can access my network even though i am not connected to the same home wifi network when i am out of my apartment? I want to be able to access my lightroom catalog and photos so that i am not restricted to doing my photo editing solely from my desk but i can access the same files and not have to go through the process of - copying, moving, overwriting - every time i want to do some photo editing from my laptop if i am not home but need to send a client some of their photos and i do not want to be limited to only doing this from my home desk.

Tha most definitely does NOT help, because it means you do not control your Router. Getting unsolicited queries to your Mac from off-Network sometimes requires your Router to forward them to your computers. But there may be another alternative.

It is possible that if your Router will honor certain User requests (without requiring Port Forwarding), you may be able to use 'Back to My Mac'. Read about it here:

An Apple Router is not a firm requirement. Many Routers support these requests without additional intervention. They are most often used to set up connections for Multi-Player game connections to Users on the Internet. Your Router may already be able to honor these requests from computers on its Network, even if you do not have complete "Admin" control of this Router.

That is why I cited this article. Try it with your current Router and see if it will work for you.

Some NAS makers provide software to allow Macs to remotely access their NAS devices. NetGear with their ReadyNAS are pretty good for this.

Unfortunately it seems the only option QNAP offer involves using a web-browser to access your NAS. This does however completely hide all the complexity of dealing with NAT and configuring remote access. (This is using the QNAP self cloud feature.)

Another approach you could do your self is to setup a VPN server for your home network. Then VPN to your home network and then you can exactly as normal mount the QNAP NAS share.

Did you ever get this to work as desired? I want exactly the same thing and cannot figure it out.
