Why does find/search ( command F ) frequently s...

Hi Folks,

It has been about 2 years or maybe 3 since I finally switched from Windows to a MAC laptop ( OS X Sierra now after updates). I mostly have not regretted the switch, though sometimes I still get caught not knowing how to do something on the MAC due to 20 years of habit forming on Windows, but mostly all is great. But one thing is driving me crazy(that never or rarely happened on Windows): Frequently, I will start typing and after I have typed a few words I notice nothing is showing up on the page I am typing, but instead the "Find" window or bar has opened at the bottom of the screen and my words are going there instead of where I want them. I can not make this window open unless I hold down "command" and then push "F", at least not on purpose. But I can do it all the time by accident! But I don't have any idea what I am doing to cause this so that I can try extra hard not to do that. I assume I am accidentally brushing the touchpad while typing, but I can't cause it on purpose.

Any ideas about what I might be doing to cause this? How I can avoid it? Is there a secret key I am hitting? Any setting I can change to stop this? I can not believe how often this happens!

Thx!

Bill

I don't know of cmd-F opening a search bar at the bottom of a window. The normal search field in Finder is at the top, right.

What program are you using when this happens?

Pages will open a Find/Replace window wherever you left it last, so it could be at the bottom.

Safari opens one at the top of the window, as do most other Apple apps.

You're not describing Spotlight by any chance? Its default key chord is command space. Since those keys are adjacent to one another it's easy to inadvertently invoke Spotlight.

Well, in numerous apps or programs. For example, this page right now, open in Firefox, I just hold down command, then tap f, and a search bar opens at the bottom of the screen. Then if I type in letter F or the word firefox, every letter f on this page or every word firefox will be highlighted. Same thing in other apps like textEdit, I think it might work in most any app or window, I use it all the time, very handy for finding some word. I just can't figure out how I am doing that by accident, since I have to hold down command and then click F. But it happens several times per day, I start out doing something like typing to respond to your post, and suddenly I am typing in the Find bar. Weird. Thx for the response!

That does happen in Firefox, but i don't use Firefox, so I can't explain how it might accidentally happen.

All the apps I use put the search at the top or in a floating window.

I have never managed to accidentally open the search panel, so I'm not sure how it is happening for you.

Yep, that would make more sense, seeing how command and space are so close together. But nope, that is a totally different bar/window, it appears in the upper part of my screen, while the irritating find bar is appearing at the very bottom of my screen. Which is normal and fine when I want it to happen. I just can't figure out how it is happening by accident while I am typing. Even with spotlight, I still have to hold down command, though I have been able to make it happen if I try hard to press both command and space at the same time. But the command and F are kind of far apart to be hitting them both at the same time by accident. Apparently, this is not a common problem. Leave it to me! Thx for the response!

Are you accidentally mashing cmd+f? I don't know how you could do it without knowing but sometimes we develop strange affectations that we don't notice

System Preferences > Keyboard, Shortcuts tab. Add a new shortcut for 'All Applications'. Insert 'Find…' as the menu name & give it something less obvious like cmd+alt+shif+f. If it stops happening you know you have been hitting the shortcut without realising.

NOTE: menu shortcuts use the ellipsis character '…' not 3 periods. Hit 'alt+;' to enter the correct character otherwise it may not work (or paste my characters). The menu will show the new shortcut when correct.

See the difference? … vs ...

Thanks, I gave that a try. under sys pref/keyboard/shortcuts/app shortcuts/all applications I copied "Find…" into the title and gave it the combo option-command-F. But now that just command seems to just open a google search in my Firefox browser, while the old command-F still opens the same search window bottom left in the browser, the one which I so often open by accident. Seems to me I what I need to try is to change the command-F shortcut to have some other modifier in there such as the one I just added, option-command-F. But I can not find this shortcut anywhere in order to attempt to alter it. You would think it would be under the keyboard shortcuts but no sign of it or anywhere else.

Besides Firefox, which apps open a search bar at the bottom of the screen?

Can you take a screen shot of a few of them and post here?

I cannot find another app that puts a search bar at the bottom of the screen. As I already mentioned, some apps will have a floating window that you can move around, so those could be at the bottom if that is where you moved the window. My guess is you have some third-party app that is popping up that search field.

I would say it primarily happens in Firefox, as that is the app in which I am most likey to be typing a response. Within Firefox, probably most often(totally?) in Facebook
