Replaced SSD in MBP and planned to use older SS...

I replaced the SSD (samsung 840 EVO) in a MBP 2011 with a new SSD (samsung 850 EVO) and the laptop works fine.  Both hard drives worked fine.  My issue is not with the MBP.  It is with the SSD that I took out of the MBP (samsung 840 evo).  It had OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite on it and my files.  I plan to use this drive as an external drive in an enclosure.  (I use Yosemite because of certain softwares I have that work well on this OS.)  I'm not new to computers and replacing drives etc and have been doing so for many years - as a user, so I'm not a novice but not an expert either.  So, I took this now loose SSD drive popped it in a disk reader and it came up on my mbp desktop.  I tried in 'disk utility' (as I used to do for all other drives in years past) to erase the drive, reformat it, so I can use it as an external.  It wouldn't erase it.  I tried other things but it wouldn't erase (or reformat it).  So I manually deleted the folders off the drive - which had the OS and my files etc - and then emptied the trash.  Then tried to reformat it.  It wouldn't work.  There showed up (if I recall correctly) at some point the 'recovery disk' portion that is included on any OS install on a mac.  I tried a couple other things, and quit.  The SSD ex drive which used to have OS X on it Yosemite, does not show up at all now on my mac or even on a windows pc.  It worked fine in my MBP before I replaced it.  And I don't know why it wouldn't erase.  I just want to make it usable as an ex hd.  Now it doesn't reveal itself on my mac and I don't know what to do.  It's been about a month and it's just sitting here - would love to use it.  Any help or advice as to what to do is appreciated.  Thank you.

going to get some hate here, but if you have any access to windows 10, like at a library, try to reformat it from there.
