apple superdrive rejects movie dvds

An Apple external superdrive (USB connected to iMac), approximately two years old, used nearly daily in that time _only_ for playing commercially produced and marketed, pre-recorded movie/tv episodes now rejects DVDs after several seconds after being inserted.  Various operations were performed in various sequences and combinaitons in troubleshooting: disconnect/reconnect superdrive, connect to different USB port on iMac, restart iMac, re-enter preferences in Apple DVD Player application, shut down iMac, unplug iMac power, disconnect superdrive from iMac, plug iMac back in to power, restart iMac, plug superdrive into USB port on iMac . . .   Still rejects ("spits out") movie DVD, which it played from ok a day ago.  Tried a couple of other pre-recorded commercial movie DVDs (other titles, marketers, etc) with no change in failure mode.

Are there any other actions that might might return the superdrive to accept and play these types of DVDs?

Might this be caused by dirt in side the player (even though it doesn't get moved from one spot on the desk and isn't in a dust or otherwise dirty environment?

Or is this simply a matter of terminal hardware failure, well after the end of the limited one year warranty period?  Is it now just a square aluminum frisbee?
