Reset Protected Data

I know that a lot of users have already asked this question before and gotten somewhat similar responses, but I still want to know, apart from contacting support, what can I do if none of my other devices can approve the iCloud? And most importantly, what does 'Reset Protected Data' mean and do? It won't matter really much if I just ignore the notification symbol on my System Preferences icon and ignore iCloud right? Everything will still function the way they're supposed to right?

If you ignore iCloud, everything should work.

If you ignore iCloud, everything should work.

But what does 'reset protected data' do? Thank you to your reply though, it's really helpful.

You are welcome. Unfortunately, I don't know what 'reset protected data' does. I've never seen the message on my accounts or in any other posts I've read in the Apple Support Community.

If you select 'Reset Protected Data' a second pop up asks you to confirm with the following message:

"Reset Protected Data?

Passwords, home and other protected data stored in iCloud will be permanently deleted.  You can't undo this action."

I assume this is related to keychain.  I get this error too, even though I have keychain off.

It resets Keychain data.

I had this issue come up while trying to get two-factor authentication on my iPhone (worked on computer and iPad). I had the same issue you describe, and I finally bit the bullet and reset protected data. All it did was reset Keychain (which I don't use anyway, and was off) and everything works fine now.

Hi,

I was having this same problem and couldn't find any answer either. I just decided to reset protected data and I found out that it only deletes saved passwords on Keychain if you even have it set up. Don't worry about photos or anything of any other sort being erased. Only passwords are erased and that annoying red icon on the settings app is gone!

It gives the impression that all iCloud data will be deleted when essentially all it will do is make changes to your keychain. All data will be preserved and apple care has confirmed this too.
