Workout app with external heart rate monitor

I was wondering if the iOS Workout app will default to using data from an external heart rate monitor if there is one paired my watch, rather than using the watch's built in one? I like the more accurate readings from a chest strap one, but I'd rather keep it simple and use the built-in iOS Workout app rather than gimicky 3rd party apps.

Hi

If an external heart rate monitor is paired to your Apple Watch, then your watch will use data from that source instead of the built-in heart rate sensor when recording workouts via the Workout app.

Hi,

I paired my external heart rate monitor to my Apple Watch today and started a workout. The calories were way off.  (My chest strap pairs with a a screen during my class and it gives me total cals at end of class). It seems like the watch was still using the built in Watch Monitor instead of the external. Any advice?
