After a song plays, the play count does not rec...

Does anyone know why after a song plays on my iTunes library, it will not register as another play.  If it doesn't have a play, it will not show 1 after a full play.  If it shows a 1, it will not show 2 after a full play.  This JUST started.  It has NEVER happened before.  However, if I played the song on my iPhone, then sync my phone to the computer (which I do almost every day), then it WILL show as an additional play.  I am thoroughly confused.
