iMac 5k suddenly extremely slow

My 5K iMac (late 2014) suddenly is very slow bordering on unusable. It used to be fine until last week.

Safari and Finder take ages but other apps as well. Opening menus, bringing up the app launcher. It works for a couple of minutes then the app and/or whole system temporarily freezes  and I get the beachball.

I can't find a culprit in activity monitor. If I start in Safe Mode the system is slow as well.

I have a 3GB Fusion Drive which is half full. Apples Disk Utility does not show any errors. I have 8GB of RAM.  I am using iCloud, Dropbox and Adobe CC. I have an external drive for backup connected through USB.

Any ideas?

Have Apple evaluate that Mac for a hardware fault: Contact Support.

If the same symptoms occur in "Safe Mode" then it is likely its hard disk drive has failed. Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The report you posted does not indicate a Time Machine backup the conforms to Apple's requirements.

Two new developments:

- My iMac now sometimes shuts down and I see a black screen with a white prohibition sign.

- More importantly I have created a new user account on this machine. And everything is fine so far within that new account. I am downloading everything from iCloud right now and keeping an eye on things. So far no problems.

Do you still think this error is hardware / hard drive related? Is there a way to check my hard drive other than Disk Utility? Or is it more reasonable to suspect a software / configuration error? Maybe something related to iCloud Drive?

Do you still think this error is hardware / hard drive related? Is there a way to check my hard drive other than Disk Utility?

Normally I would ask to see the S.M.A.R.T. report from the storage device, but the EtreCheck does not have "ANY" storage information.  I suspect that this version of EtreCheck (3.3.3) is having a problem, as it generally gives details about your device, along with a button to [Show SMART report].  But that is missing from your report.

Could you run EtreCheck again, and see if under Disk Information: there is more details, AND if there is a [Show SMART report] button.  If there is a [Show SMART report], could you click on it and post the output?

I've asked the EtreCheck author to look at this thread as well, just in case there is a bug in EtreCheck.

Or is it more reasonable to suspect a software / configuration error? Maybe something related to iCloud Drive?

Generally the kinds of problems you are having are not user specific, so creating a new account should not have changed behavior.

That is to say the kinds of problems you are experiencing are either hardware, or some 3rd party kernel extension that would exist no matter which user was logged in.

That does not mean it is impossible for the non-privileged user software to cause problems, it is just not something we are used to seeing.

By all means continue to setup the new user as you would like to use it, and see if the system remains stable.  After all, it is more important that you use your Mac the way you want, then for our guesses to be right

OK, the new user account became slow rather quickly as well.

I've bought an external drive, made backups, reformatted my hard drive and installed MacOS anew. Day 2 and it's looking good.

hi Knodel,

Has it been working fine since you reformatted your hard drive? I am facing almost the exact same problem. It seems the problem is coming from when the computer read/write from the fusion disk although i see nothing specially heavy from Activity monitor. Is the problem coming back after some time?

Thanks.
