MacBook Pro: Unable to complete Touch ID setup

Hello,

I have a brand-new 2016 15" MacBook Pro — I did not use migration assistant. During initial setup, I was able to add one fingerprint to Touch ID, but I am not able to add any additional fingerprints — I get the error message:

Failed
Unable to complete Touch ID setup

Is anyone else seeing this? Does anyone have a solution?

What finally worked for me was deleting the one Touch ID fingerprint that was created during initial setup. After that, I was able to add up to three fingerprints via the Touch ID Preferences Pane.

Experiencing the same issue.

What worked for me was using an Ethernet to USB adapter and looks like it worked.

This article has a lot more details:

Deleting a Touch ID fingerprint requires putting the cursor over the fingerprint in the Touch ID Preferences Pane, at which point you can click on the small "X" in a circle that appears over the fingerprint.

hi there

I experience the same problem the last few days, so I removed my fingerprint and tried to add it again

Unfortunately, after clicking on adding a fingerprint I directly get the following error message:

'Failed Unable to complete Touch ID setup'

I have shut down my laptop, tried to do this procedure again, and I always get the same error message

thanks

Same here - my problem just started in the last two days. I noticed that Touch ID wasn't working to unlock my computer and after trying to replace the fingerprints, I got the "Failed Unable to complete Touch ID Setup". Tried restarting computer, no effect.  Not on the beta versions, just on 10.12.3.  Was working after update until two days ago.

Thanks

So, I tried resetting the PRAM (option-command-p-r at startup).  That worked for me.  I was able to redo my fingerprints, failure message gone, now all is working again.  No idea why it went bad in the first place, but at least this fixed it.

This solution worked for me.  Thank you for the answer.  My Touch ID is working again.

worked for me thanks for fix

Thanks. That also worked for me

If you have any "virus software" remove it. For example Symantec.

I had the same problem. It happened after I had to create a new Keychain because I forgot my password.

I deleted the old fingerprint and I was able to enter a new one.
