Can the hdd part of the fusion drive be replace...
Is there any technical reason why the mechanical (hdd) can't be replaced with a large sata ssd in the fusion drive setup?
You could special order the iMac 5k with a 1TB SSD instead of
an Apple Fusion Drive, a Fusion is a combination HDD & SSD.
Read the specs in the Store on those options, or contact an
Apple Store about obtaining a suitable replacement upgrade.
Or an AASP 'authorized Apple service provider' may help.
Good luck!
I doubt that configuration you are suggesting would be worthwhile. The Fusion Drive is configured to keep the files with high access rates on the SSD and those with low access rate on the HDD. So if you did this it would be moving files back and forth between two SSD that have equally fast access to data. So there would be a tremendous amount overhead for nothing.
It will work just fine once you remove the HDD and the small SSD and replace them with one large SSD. There would be no point to the exercise, otherwise.
None of these replies addressed the reason for my original question.
I do appreciate the answers however I see I should have been a bit more thorough in my query.
I know how the fusion works. I know you can get a 1 tb ssd with the imac.
I also know that it is very very expensive to get a pure pcie 1 tb ssd as an option.
The reason for my question is to see if the sata ssd which is a little slower and also much much cheaper than pcie flash ssds can be used instead of the slow
hdd in the fusion configuration. I have ordered the 512 gb pcie flash for my imac so I am committed to pure ssd. I would still like to know if
what I mentioned is possible as a much less expensive option.
Sorry for the confusion but in a rather lengthy search throughout the net and asking Apple's Geniuses I have been as yet unable to get any answer.
It would seem to me that using a sata ssd instead of a sata hdd would be nothing but beneficial in the fusion setup.
It is not pointless seeing as pcie ssd is much faster and also much more expensive than sata ssds.
The whole point is to reduce cost and still keep a quiet fast computer.
Thus using a cheaper sata ssd instead of a hdd would have a point I would think.
Sorry Allan the reply to Kappy actually was meant for you.
I would add that the pcie flash and a cheaper sata ssd are nowhere equally fast.
Compared to hdds perhaps but not to each other.
I would also add that large sata ssds can be had for much much less than pcie based ssds.
Having said that, I understand that a large pcie ssd is ofc the best but it would be nice to have second fusion option.
If you like speed and zero noise it seems to me that a large slower sata ssd and a small faster pcie drive in fusion mode would work almost as well.
I know it's not an available option, I am just curious whether there is any technical reason it would not work.
There is a point btw seeing as it would be much less expensive than pure pcie flash.
Did you ever get an answer for this?
I have a 2tb fusion installed on my computer and have a Samsung Evo 850 2TB SSD kicking around.
I'm wondering what the best option would be for me.
Either:
1. Take both fusion drives out and run OS from Evo in place of HDD
2. Manage to fuse internal 128gb Flash with Evo
Would this basically be like running at SSD speed with even faster Flash running the operating system?
Rather then posting at the bottom of a thread that has been dead for the last three year, you would be much better served to start your own thread with full details of your problem.
Ok I will do thanks.
Normally people say to search the forum before posting the same questions so I thought after finding the same issue I'd check if it was resolved.
Will post..
