How to move GMail to iCloud
I have a GMail account that I would like to move to the iCloud. I have updated Lion to 10.7.2 and have set up the iCloud preferences. iCloud appears in the Apple Mail as a new Inbox, but all of my emails are going to the Gmail inbox in Apple's Mail. I do have a new @me.com address. What do I need to do to get the GMail into iCloud?
I have the same question. Hopefully one of the experts can help us both out soon
same question here. Would like an answere.......

Any emails sent to your @gmail.com address will continue to come into the Gmail inbox. Each email address has its own InBox.
What do I need to do to get the GMail into iCloud?
Can you clarify exactly what you want to do?
You have email messages in your GMail mailboxes that you want to move to the equivalent mailboxes of your new iCloud account, and then continue using only your new @me.com email address?
I infer from your comments then that Google email users who want all of their email in "the cloud" need to migrate from from using Google to iCloud and advise all their contacts of their new email address, correct? Pesumably, they also may want to keep their @gmail.com accounts in their Apple mail apps for historical reference and until all of their contacts are using the new @me.com accounts. I guess what wasn't clear to me and maybe other Google gmail users until just recently is that Google is a server and iCloud is a server and you can have either or both for sending, receiving and storing email, and Apple's Mail app can access both. Before updating my iPhone to IOS 5, my notes would sync whenever I synced to my MacBook Pro. Now, even using the usb port, notes no longer sync which is a problem fo rme. That sounds like a take-back that was not clear.
Woops. Sorry, answered too soon. Figured out how to use notes as a gmail user:
On your iPhone, go to Settings.
Select "Mail, Cotacts, Calendars."
Select your gmail account.
Set Notes to the On position.
Now on your Mac, go to the Mail app. Make sure the mail box side-bar is visible by clicking Show in the upper left hand corner, then go down to Notes and click the little arrow for drop-down items. You'll see a choices for On My Mac and also for Gmail. Notes should show up in this folder now when you use the yellow notes app on your iPhone. On my MacBook Pro, I have my notes folder on my mail toolbar and can do the drop down from there. Hope this helps.
Bad move, iCloud has far less features than Gmail. it is a seriously stripped down version of MobileMe and it's buggy too.
Good move, google services have gone bloaty of late, and are becoming buggy. Apple has far less features and is therefore far more focused on what an email client needs, as opposed to bells and whistles of little use. I also quite like not having a third of my screen taken up with ads I don't want based on analysis of every word in my private emails.
But that's just me.
;o)
I finally called Apple support and was instructed to do the following:
1. Login to Gmail from a Mac or PC. (can not be done on iPad)
2. Save Gmail contacts as a v-card file.
3. Go to www.iCloud.com and log-in.
4. Import v-card file.

GMail is already in the cloud, but it is in Googles cloud instead of Apples. If you want your mail in iCloud use and iCloud address!
The issue I had was wanting to move my Gmail contacts to my iPhone so I could stop using Gmail. I personally do not trust or like their big brother" attitude. Now that I ditched my Droid, I want to ditch Google.
Based on my call to Apple support, the tech said this was not possible from the iPhone itself. He gave me the directions 2 posts up.
I also found this article. https://ihowtoguide.wordpress.com/2011/10/13/how-to-transfer-google-contacts-to-i cloud/

Gmail: Can take a while (i.e. if you have been using since 2006)
Contacts: Super Fast to switch
Calendar: Super Fast to switch
Hope this helps.
Wondering why these comments are so old? Would answers still apply now 8 years later?
